From Hunger to Hope — Feeding Dreams of Slum Children

In life, some of the greatest acts of kindness begin with the smallest moments — a glance, a question, or a feeling that someone deserves better. For Meera Agravat, a schoolteacher from Gujarat, that moment came when she saw children playing barefoot on the roadside near a slum.

Curious, she asked one of them, “Have you eaten anything today?”
The little boy replied softly, “No, Didi… we’ll eat when my parents come back from work. If they don’t get work today, we won’t get food.”

That simple answer broke her heart — and changed her life forever.

The Beginning of Avyanam Foundation

Eight years ago, Meera decided she couldn’t just walk past that pain anymore. She started with what she knew best teaching. Every evening, she gathered children from nearby slums and began free tuition classes. But soon, she realized something deeper — a hungry child cannot study.

To truly help them, she had to feed them first.
What began as a few home-cooked meals shared with 100 children has now grown into a movement — over 400+ children fed and educated every day through her organization, the Avyanam Foundation.

A Family of Hope

In one of those slum communities, Meera met a widow struggling to raise three children after losing her husband. With no income and no family support, she was close to giving up.

Meera stepped in. She offered to care for the children during the evenings, ensuring they received daily meals and education, while the mother could work to rebuild her life.

This is just one of many such stories. Across these slum areas, Meera has become a guardian not just to children, but also to abandoned elders, single mothers, and families left behind by society.

Education and Nourishment Both are Importent

For Meera, food is just the beginning. Her vision goes beyond filling stomachs — it’s about shaping futures. She has helped enroll many children in government schools and focuses on their intellectual and emotional growth, giving them the tools to build a brighter tomorrow for themselves and their families.

The Challenge Ahead

Today, Avyanam Foundation feeds and educates hundreds of underprivileged children every day. But to continue this mission, they urgently need:

  • Daily ration and groceries for meal preparation
  • A vehicle for food delivery to various slum areas
  • Stationery and study materials for the children

With your support, over 600 orphaned and underprivileged children can receive two nutritious meals every day for the next three months, along with continued education and care.

Each meal you contribute is not just food — it’s hope, strength, and love served on a plate.

“No child should have to choose between food and education.”— Meera Agravat, Founder, Avyanam Foundation

About the NGO

Founded eight years ago by Meera Agravat, the Avyanam Foundation works across slum areas to feed, educate, and uplift children from underprivileged backgrounds. What began as evening tuitions for a handful of kids has now grown into a movement of compassion — providing food, education, and emotional care to 400+ children daily.

The Foundation continues its mission to ensure that no child sleeps hungry and every child gets the chance to learn, grow, and dream.
